THE DOMINICAN Republic’s runner-up will
substitute for Puerto Rico’s representation at
Caribbean baseball’s premier event next year.
The suspension of P.R.’s championship for
2007-2008, allegedly for financial reasons, will
have effects beyond the island since, in its
absence from the tournament, the host country,
the Dominican Republic, will have to field an
additional team, namely the second best team
from its own tournament.
This would make it the second time, in the 37
years the D.R. has been a participant, the country has two teams competing for the Caribbean
baseball’s crown. The other two rivals are
Venezuela and Mexico. Juan Francisco Puello Herrera, president of the Baseball Federation of the Caribbean, lamented the situation and regretted not having over the Puerto Ricans, who have not won the Caribbean Series since 2000 but who are nevertheless the Dominican nemesis.
Still, some experts expect the event to maintain a high standard of competitiveness and to draw a large crowd.
